At the last council meeting two gentlemen spoke in favor the Comfort Women statue to be unveiled tomorrow. They both stated the statue does not represent Japan bashing, I believe their sincerity.

I am here today to advice that statue is a form of Japan bashing as perceived by the victims of this bashing, the people and nation of Nihon, Japan.

Please allow me to clarify how I can make such a statement by explaining my association with Japan, Nihon.

During past seven years I have traveled the length and breadth of Japan from Okinawan to Hokkaido, speaking at numerous conferences. During this time I also authored seven books in Japan. I also have been writing a weekly column in a Japanese nationwide newspaper for the past three years. During my travels and talks I met with Japanese covering all the demographics basically a cross section of the Japanese populace.

I can honestly state to a person they all perceive these Comfort Women statues / memorials as a pure form of Japan bashing. They feel the placement of these items dishonor the nation and people of Japan.

This proposed Comfort Women statue only memorializes women servicing the Japanese military. While at the same time ignoring the women pressed into Comfort Service by the South Korean military for the U.S. military over about a forty year period starting around 1950, and a lawsuit currently is pending. Also ignores the Comfort Women pressed into service by South Korean troops for South Korean troops in Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

In addition, you are inserting yourself in the middle of the international dispute.

I am not stating you should not allow this statue, just requesting in the statues inscription you include the other two ignored Comfort Women groups. Or perhaps instead of mentioning Japan, South Korea, or Vietnam, omit any mention of a nation and just memorialize all women who served as Comfort Women during the 20th century.

If this was going to be added in a park in the community I live in, I would be furious for dragging the community into an international dispute. I would demand the city council remove the offending artwork, but since this is not my community I can only hope you good folks see the damage this is doing.

By doing so, you will demonstrate to the nation and people of Japan your concern for all women who served as Comfort Women in the Asian theater during that century. It will also demonstrate the sincerity of the two people who spoke at the City Council meeting stating it was not “Japan bashing.”

Thank you for your time and consideration.
